Video Age’s New Video Is an Ode to Loving From Far Away

“Is It Her?” explores what it feels like when you think you’ve found the one.

Video Age’s 2018 sophomore album, Pop Therapy, saw the New Orleans band merge soothing nostalgia with groovy futurism while exploring the weirder side of dream-pop. It’s an album full of sensual synths, retro riffs, and touchingly nostalgic lyrics, making Video Age an act to look out for in 2019.

The band’s video for “Is It Her?,” which we’re premiering today, is a charming representation of a romantic daydream. Directed by Zack Shorrosh and Annie Nowak, it features singer Ross Farbe sitting on the steps of the New Orleans Museum of Art, fancifully singing into a microphone that is hooked up to a portable blue box, thematically recalling Triathalon‘s recent “Courtside” video. He wanders around the Museum garden and then later onto a tourist boat as he dreams about the woman he thinks might be the one—a woman who seems to be far away from him, and perhaps totally out of reach. He yearns to be close to her, singing that “missing [her] would never end,” and he imagines “how happy [they] could be.” He fantasizes about dancing with her, and we get fleeting shots of the two of them together that flash by like sweet memories.

The song is a romantic down-tempo lullaby that brings to mind dreamy tracks like Kevin Krauter’s “Suddenly” and Mild High Club’s “Kokopelli.” Its airy synths, stripped-down drums and silvery guitar chords evoke that sense of calm and relief (but also excitement) that you get once you’ve finally found what you’re looking for, even if it doesn’t always work out.

“Shot at NOMA, City Park, and the Algiers Point Ferry in New Orleans, the video, and track, is about recurring visions of lost love,” the band told AdHoc via email.
