RESONANCY: Sasha Berliner, Jon Curry
Sasha Berliner is a musician, composer, producer, and band leader from San Francisco, CA. Sasha started playing drums at eight years old. She pursued a jazz emphasis at her high school, Oakland School for the Arts, where she picked up the vibraphone at age 13. At 16, she wrote and published her first album entitled “Gold” and was a member of the SF Jazz High School All Stars Orchestra. She moved to New York in 2016 to attend the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.
The Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music alumni has headlined at venues like the NYC Winter Jazz Festival, The Jazz Gallery, The Blue Note, Montreal Jazz Festival, and National Sawdust.
Sasha is currently finishing her Bachelor’s degree at The New School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and her music work remains primarily based in New York City. In 2019, she was a nominee for best vibraphonist in the Downbeat Readers’ Poll and “Best New Artist” in the JazzTimes Reader Poll.
Jonathan Curry is a Durham-based drummer. He studied Jazz and Music Industry at NCCU and has had the opportunity to play with artists such as Branford Marsalis, Christian Scott (Atunde Adjuah), Akuah Allrich, and Rapsody, just to name a few. He believes that he must use his artistic ability to continue the ongoing fight for freedom and liberation of all peoples.
RESONANCY is an ongoing performance series that explores the vast and evolving landscape of percussion-centric music and arts. Our aim is to connect percussive threads between creative communities and offer a platform for innovation, improvisation, and collaboration along the rhythmic backbone. -Devon Tuttle
