Weaves shed their disillusion and discontent on an unexpectedly uplifting way.
Toronto indie rockers Weaves just shared a video for the song “Shithole” from their debut self-titled LP. Singing behind various guises of makeup and costume, front-woman Jasmyn Burke sheds her disillusion and discontent: “I remember turning 15 / And thinking life’s not right / I’m living in a shithole” The track is a deeply personal statement, beautifully downtrodden, yet ultimately uplifting. Burke shared that she wrote the lyrics to “Shithole” when she was feeling down, but the song was soon lost in the depths of her hard drive. It’s a blessing the song was not lost completely. Burke sings she’s “Hoping for something to take me off this land,” a potent statement that rings true for many young Americans today.
Weaves will play on November 20 at Baby’s All Right and November 21 at Webster Hall. They will be joining Fear of Men on both dates, and Mitski at Webster hall. Weaves is out now on Kanine Records.
